My Canadian exchange programme experience

At the beginning of the year, I had the chance to join a Canadian work exchange programme with Adams and Miles (A&M), an accounting firm in Toronto. I was both excited and nervous about what lay ahead. Participating in the programme provided a unique mix of professional development, cultural exposure, and personal growth. Working at A&M was enriching and educational, but it also came with some challenges…

Cultural adjustment

Adapting to the A&M culture was a refreshing experience, as it emphasised different values, communication styles, and work habits compared to what I was used to at Gilligan Sheppard. Whilst initially challenging, I found building relationships with colleagues and understanding the nuances of social interactions in a Canadian context highly rewarding. I found that I had to adjust to different expectations regarding working hours, which was difficult when away from my support system and familiar surroundings. Acclimatising to the daily commute, higher cost of living, and more extreme weather in Toronto was interesting, especially coming from the opposite season in Auckland.

Integrating and adapting in the workplace

A significant aspect of my experience was the regulatory and standards differences. Canada follows International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), which differ significantly from the accounting standards used in New Zealand. Moreover, I had to take time to understand and apply the various compliance and regulatory requirements specific to the Canadian financial landscape and familiarise myself with the specific accounting software and technological tools used by A&M.

Naturally, learning new accounting processes and procedures was essential. However, the supportive work culture and the resources provided by the firm made the transition smoother. Integrating into teams involved understanding how to contribute effectively and adapting to the different leadership and management styles prevalent at A&M. Navigating the organisational structure meant understanding the firm’s hierarchical structure, building professional relationships, and adapting to different decision-making systems.

Despite all this, participating in the work exchange programme was transformative. As my time at A&M came to an end, I reflected on the incredible journey I had undertaken. It enhanced my technical skills and deepened my understanding of global accounting practices and Canadian business culture. The insights and experiences gained were invaluable, making me more competent and allowing me to grow personally and professionally.

After my programme had finished, I took the opportunity to explore the vibrant cities across Canada. I revelled in the natural beauty of the diverse Canadian landscape, from the majestic Rocky Mountains to the serene lakes and forests. I also immersed myself in the local culture by participating in numerous festivals and events, each offering a unique glimpse into the rich traditions and lively spirit of the Canadian people. One of the highlights of my experience was watching ice hockey, the quintessential Canadian sport, which captivated me with its fast pace and enthusiastic fans. Banff stood out as my favourite among the incredible places I visited. The stunning scenery, outdoor activities, and charming town made it unforgettable.
