Your expert guide in NZ taxation
‘If taxation is your pain, then you should remember his name.’
Richard Ashby is Gilligan Sheppard’s resident tax expert. His journey began at the IRD, where he spent a combined seven and a half years at the Whangarei and Henderson offices before deciding to ‘swap sides’ to the private sector. After cutting his teeth at a small CA firm, Richard found his home at Gilligan Sheppard, where his expertise and dedication earned him the position of Tax Partner.
Now, with over thirty years of experience in New Zealand taxation, Richard has become a trusted advisor for clients of all types and sizes. His practice focuses on providing comprehensive tax solutions, from handling complex IRD communications during risk reviews and audits to crafting payment solutions for clients facing tax challenges. Richard also offers his services to other accountants who may not have their own internal tax resources or who are simply looking for a second opinion.
Richard excels in delivering detailed written opinions on tax implications for both proposed and completed transactions, including vital tax due diligence for business acquisitions. As a member of IR Global, Richard has an extensive international network. He provides strategic guidance for both NZ clients looking to expand their activities offshore, or those who are offshore, looking to enter the NZ environment. He has developed a global affiliation with likeminded colleagues in most foreign taxing jurisdictions, which provides the added advantage of being able to put his clients in touch, with trusted, on-the-ground local advisors.
